There was no doubt that the third movie of the Twilight Saga franchise would be huge. Even before it was released, the movie has already smashed several records. On MovieTickets.com, it is the topseller for online advanced tickets and accounts for more than 50% of daily tickets sales. Fandango reported that 82% of their advanced online ticket sales is for Eclipse and has stayed on the top five since May 14, 2010. Gold Class Cinemas said that it has also broken the record of their tickets sales as 8,500 tickets have been reserved. The movie also grabbed the record of Iron Man for having the widest theatrical release in Hollywood history.
The movie then held their midnight opening last Wednesday, and it was record breaking. Eclipse crashed the record set by New Moon last week for having the biggest midnight opening in domestic history. It was shown in over 4,000 theaters and earned an estimated $30 million, eclipsing New Moon’s $26.3 million in 3,514 theaters.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse also grabbed the record from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen for having the highest grossing IMAX opening in North America . The third installment of the nTwilight series was shown in 192 IMAX theaters and earned about $1 million. The sequel to the 2007 action flick Transformer earned about $959,000 last year.
